Summer Impact Math Camp

Here is an outline of low- to no-cost activities to do with your scholars in grades 3rd through 5th to continue building foundational math skills.


Week 1: Building Confidence with Basic Operations

Monday: Addition

  • Activity: Create a number line (drawn on paper or a ruler) and solve problems like 23 + 15, 45 + 32.

  • Game: Play "Race to 100" – take turns rolling a die and adding the number to your total. First to reach 100 wins.

Tuesday: Subtraction

  • Activity: Use small objects (coins or buttons) to solve problems like 45 - 18 or 62 - 29.

  • Game: "Subtraction Bowling" – Set up 10 plastic cups as pins. Knock some down and subtract the number knocked over from 10.

Wednesday: Multiplication

  • Activity: Practice skip counting (e.g., count by 3s, 5s, 7s) and solve simple multiplication problems like 4 × 6 or 7 × 3.

  • Game: "Times Table Toss" – Toss a ball back and forth while reciting multiplication tables.

Thursday: Division

  • Activity: Use playdough or candies to divide items into equal groups (e.g., divide 12 into 3 equal groups).

  • Game: "Division Relay" – Write division problems on sticky notes. Solve each one to move to the next.

Friday: Mixed Review

  • Activity: Solve a mix of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems.

  • Game: "Math Bingo" – Create bingo cards with various problems. Solve them to mark spaces.



Week 2: Real-World Math Applications

Monday: Addition

  • Activity: Add prices from a pretend grocery list.

  • Game: "Price Match" – Find two items that add up to 10,10, 10,15, or $20.

Tuesday: Subtraction

  • Activity: Solve elapsed time problems (e.g., "If the movie starts at 2:30 PM and ends at 4:00 PM, how long is it?").

  • Game: "Change Giver" – Pretend to buy items and calculate the change from 10or10 or 10or20.

Wednesday: Multiplication

  • Activity: Multiply items in rows (e.g., 3 rows of 5 apples = 15 apples).

  • Game: "Array Relay" – Draw arrays (e.g., dots or squares) to model multiplication problems.

Thursday: Division

  • Activity: Divide a pizza or a snack into equal portions.

  • Game: "Division Detective" – Solve word problems that involve sharing items equally (e.g., "12 cookies shared among 4 friends").

Friday: Mixed Review

  • Activity: Solve real-world word problems involving all operations.

  • Game: "Math Scavenger Hunt" – Find objects around the house or daycare that match a math problem.



Week 3: Strengthening Fluency

Monday: Addition

  • Activity: Solve 10 quick addition problems in 1 minute and try to beat your score.

  • Game: "Addition War" – Use playing cards to add numbers. Highest sum wins the round.

Tuesday: Subtraction

  • Activity: Solve subtraction puzzles (e.g., fill in the blank: __ - 27 = 15).

  • Game: "Subtraction Cross" – Create a crossword puzzle where each answer is a subtraction problem.

Wednesday: Multiplication

  • Activity: Use flashcards to practice multiplication tables.

  • Game: "Multiplication Hopscotch" – Write numbers on the ground and solve problems to jump to the correct answer.

Thursday: Division

  • Activity: Use a deck of cards to divide numbers (e.g., pick two cards and divide the larger number by the smaller).

  • Game: "Division Dominoes" – Match domino halves by solving division problems.

Friday: Mixed Review

  • Activity: Solve a worksheet combining all operations (handwritten or printed).

  • Game: "Math Tic-Tac-Toe" – Solve problems to earn Xs and Os on a tic-tac-toe board.



Week 4: Fun and Creative Problem-Solving

Monday: Addition

  • Activity: Create your own addition puzzle and solve a peer's puzzle.

  • Game: "Math Memory" – Match addition problems to their answers.

Tuesday: Subtraction

  • Activity: Write a subtraction story (e.g., "If I have 50 candies and eat 23...").

  • Game: "Subtraction Target" – Throw a ball at a target with numbers and subtract the number hit.

Wednesday: Multiplication

  • Activity: Solve multiplication riddles (e.g., "What’s the product of 6 and 7, plus 5?").

  • Game: "Multiplication Bingo" – Create bingo cards with multiples of numbers.

Thursday: Division

  • Activity: Create division stories (e.g., "If I have 20 cupcakes and share them with 4 friends...").

  • Game: "Division Dice" – Roll dice to create and solve division problems.

Friday: Mixed Review

  • Activity: Solve a math maze (path determined by correct answers to problems).

  • Game: "Escape Room Math" – Solve a series of problems to unlock the "room" (e.g., move to the next activity).
