HUMANS BECOMING LLC  •  The Beginning of Possibilities

Growing a Confident Reader — Quick Reference

Rising 4th Grade  •  Keep it warm, short, and pressure-free!

💬 BUILD COMPREHENSION

  • Ask “thinking” Qs: Why did the character do that? What would you do?

  • Summarize: Somebody / Wanted / But / So / Then.

  • Connect & question: “What does this remind you of? What are you wondering?”

  • Visualize: “Describe the scene like a movie in your mind.”

  • Mix genres: Pair a story with a real article on the same topic.

🗣️ BUILD FLUENCY

  • Read aloud together: 10–15 min daily — echo, choral, or partner read.

  • Play with expression: “Read it like you're excited / sneaking / a news anchor.”

  • Reader’s Theater: Turn a book into a play; perform for family.

  • Record & replay: Record, listen back, try again.

  • Listen for: Pauses at commas/periods, voice matches the mood.

📅 EASY WEEKLY RHYTHM

  • Daily 15 min: Independent reading of a self-chosen book (protect the joy!).

  • Daily 10 min: Read aloud together.

  • 3x week: Ask 2–3 “thinking” questions.

  • 1x week: One short summary + one fun fluency game.

  • Anytime: Visit the library; pick freely across genres.

👍 “JUST RIGHT” BOOK CHECK

Read one page. Raise a finger for each unknown word:

  • 0–1 fingers = Easy (great for confidence & speed).

  • 2–3 fingers = Just right.

  • 4–5 fingers = A stretch — read it together!

Avid readers thrive on a mix of all three.
